DID DUM MASTAM'S LOVE CONQUERED AUDIENCE’S HEARTS?
Well, we can't understand Imran Ashraf's reason
to shave his head, living in a 1 room apartment despite being country biggest
star, or the haphazard climax of the movie but we do understand our audience so
lets begin reviewing one of the biggest movies of Lollywood revival after
covid, Dum Mastam.
THE PLOT
Set in Lahore, the story is about a girl,
Alia(Amar Khan) and a boy, Bau(Imran Ashraf) who both have their career
aspirations but very different aims. Bau, a struggling singer, loves Alia since
childhood and has aim to win her heart while Alia's heart is all in her dancing
aspirations and to make it to showbiz. The main crux of the story can be
understood by Imran Ashraf's dialogue, "Apko star ban'na tha, bann mai
gya".
Alia who wanted to become a dancer gets a big
opportunity by Adnan Siddique but during her practice falls bringing fall to
her career as well and is left with no other option but to marry Bau. On the
other hand, Momin Saqib's character steals Bau's song to which Bau makes a
video which goes viral making Bau a big star but yet a failed husband. Alia
believes Bau made some technical faults making her fall on purpose and thus
never comes close to him in order to punish him until the very last scene when
still she didn't get any clarifications on her accusations but 2hrs 45 mins
were enough and the director told her to hug the hero only when he says
"Ao galay lago" and here comes an end to the movie.
ANALYSIS
Everything from acting, songs, shoot, visuals,
cinematography, dialogues, story premise etc was perfect but the question
arises where was the issue then? As evident, from the plot it was with the
screen play. All the scenes in isolation were perfect and beautiful but
together didn't make sense at many points. Scenes like Imran Ashraf shaving his
head, Amar Khan on a yacht etc were shot beautifully but didn't have much
impact because there was no sense to them.
And although the idea is not a very new one but
the treatment is fresh. The characters of the story, their motives, dialogues
all act as a blow of fresh air to the story line. We can't stop admiring Amar
Khan as a writer who reflected quite well that she's a film student as she very
well gave each character their own image through their dialogues and acts.
Although we are not quite happy with the screen play but can't
take away the credits from the actors as everyone acted out phenomenally. Imran
Ashraf acting as Bhola to Bau proved himself to be one of industry's most
versatile actors. His expressions were on point and no questions can be raised
on him as a hero. Amar Khan answered people's questions of "Who is this
new girl?" quite well with her acting and made her name with her
confidence and craft which reflected from the screen.
Momin Saqib can never fail as an entertainer but
I want to question the actor and the writer for his over the top and a bit
irritating acting. He was the main antagonist of the film but acted more like a
cameo for comic relief. Talking about supporting actors, Sohail Ahmed, Saleem
Miraj, Shahid Tipu everyone was perfect in their respective roles. Seeing Rahat
Fateh Ali Khan, Adnan Siddique, Kiran Malik, and Waleed Siddique in their cameo
roles was a big relief al though we did wish to see a bigger impact of Adnan
Siddique on the story line.
Momina Duraid once shared her vision of how it
hurts her to see Pakistani movies not having good music and this movie proves
to be a big display of her that vision. Whether we talk of Shiraz Uppal's
"Larki Achari" or Bilal Saeed and Momina Mustehsan's "Khudaya
Vey", all songs have us hooked. The choreography was amazing and it won't
be wrong to say that no movie is complete without Niggah Jee's choreography.
The locations in the songs were also mesmerizing and added on to the overall
big screen experience. Film's director Ehteshamuddin did a great job
but we did feel the direction to be same as Mahira Khan's
"Superstar". But still the film was nothing short of magic and we get
the big screen cinematic experience the viewers normally complain about.
ALL IN ALL
Concluding, it was a big screen movie with great
acting, songs, shots, direction, and cinematography but the screen play was all
over the place. Moreover, the movie is a bit too elongated but overall, a good
one time watch and thus we will rate it 6.5 out of 10.
